What Orwell Knew

"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence. In other words, it is war minus the shooting." -George Orwell, writer (1903-1950)

And then this word of the day and the following quote - when life keeps sending messages like this, I have to listen.

vituperate:

"There are moments in life when true invective is called for, when it becomes an absolute necessity, out of a deep sense of justice, to denounce, mock, vituperate, lash out, in the strongest possible language."
-- Charles Simic, quoted in "The argument culture", Irish Times, December 17, 1998
