Out of the Blue

You hear them before you see them. Then they roar over you, the sound of the jet engines voiding all other sound. Yesterday the Blue Angels split the sky over the Severn River. I stood with the crowd, witnessing the mastery of man and machine, the precision, the beauty of the FA18s.

Although I've lived in the Annapolis area for eighteen years, this is the first time I have stood along the river with the crowds and witnessed the Blue Angels demonstration performed every year during commissioning week for the Naval Academy. Like many, I neglected to take advantage of my close proximity of this remarkable event.

How often do we overlook what we assume will always be available to us? How often do we have the chance to alter our focus so that our eyes are drawn to the sky and what is at our feet is unknown?
